Space to relax garden

Cornwall

The brief

This small, multi-level city garden was overlooked by the neighbours and the lawn was struggling and muddy for most fo the year. The client wanted to introduce lots of colour through planting, and was keen to have an area to sit and be immersed in the garden.

The design

The lawn on the top layer of the garden was always going to struggle, given the amount of shade and damp, so we decided to remove it completely and replace it with a central seating area. This was surrounding by trees and planting to help create a private and restful place to sit and enjoy the garden. Bespoke woven oak screening was added to shield the storage area at the back of the garden. A new raised planting area was created on the lower level to soften the existing retaining wall and introduce colour to this area.

Standout feature

Many gardens centre around a lawn, but this doesn’t have to be the case. This client recognised that the gravel seating area meant that she could use that part of the garden year round and has more time to sit and enjoy the garden now that she’s not mowing!
