Italian inspiration garden

Bath

The brief

This new build garden in Bath was a completely blank slate - with a small patio near the house and the rest a grass lawn that was struggling in damp and shady conditions. The client loved Italian style gardens and wanted to include some of these classic features, but in a relaxed scheme.

The design

Given the shade cast by the large tree behind the garden, many of the traditional plants and ideas for an Italian style garden had to be adapted. Shade tolerant, evergreen shrubs like Viburnum tinus and Sarcococca were included to provide structure as they grow, and statement stone features like the benches and planters add a classical feel. The fences have been painted black which is a great colour to contrast with the green of the planting once it is established. Climbers were also planted against the fences and the new pergola, adding height to the planting without adding extra trees, which would have blocked more light from the already shady space.

Standout feature

The curves really make this garden - allowing paths to flow through the space and invite you to wander through and enjoy the different areas.
