Countryside view garden
South Wales
The brief
This garden on the edge of a welsh village had an amazing view out onto the adjacent fields. The clients wanted to introduce some screening from those walking through the field, but without loosing the view. They also wanted to add a vegetable bed near the house, compost bins and a second seating area.
The design
A large border was created along the back of the garden, with a bark chip seating area and greenhouse nestled within it, accessed by staggered paving ‘stepping stones’. Three metal drinking troughs were partically sunk in the bed and used as rasied ponds. Tall airy planting was included in the bed to screen the garden from the field without creating a solid visual block. An area for the compost bins was created, screened with trellis and climbers. A protected mature oak tree on the right of the garden created a lot of shade in the summer, so the configuration of the garden was designed with this in mind.
Standout feature
The large oak tree to the right of the garden already provided a lot of shade, so any additional trees needed to be small, not have a dense canopy and be able to cope with partial shade. The tree selected was a beautiful multistem Cornus mas, which has yellow flowers in late winter, followed by red fruits. It’s really worth investing in a great specimen tree as this will act as an important structural element in the garden. Our A tree for every garden blog has ideas for what would suit your garden, whatever the size.
