Coastal garden

Scotland

The brief

This cliented wanted a planting plan for a large border in her front garden. The aim was to screen the boat shed and the road while framing the stunning view.

The design

This planting plan needed to work for free-draining, sandy acidic soil in a sunny, exposed location. The client wanted a more cottage style rather than an overtly coastal scheme. Some of the key plants used included Fothergilla major (mountain witch alder), Salvia argentea, Verbena bonariensis and Agapanthus, interspersed with wafting grasses for screening.

Standout feature

The winters in this remote part of Scotland can feel long and dark, so including plants for winter interest was a priority. These included Cornus (dogwood), Hamamelis (witch hazel) and perennials that would hold their winter structure, like Hylotelephiums (sedum).
